On July 25, 2025, Hyperliquid burned 11,780 HYPE tokens in a single day. The transaction, worth $667,900 at current prices, was funded by $743,900 in protocol fees, largely from its perpetual DEX. Cumulative burn now stands at 47.3 million HYPE—4.73% of the fixed 1 billion max supply.
In a bull market where euphoria masks structural fragilities, this burn is both a testament to genuine demand and a distraction from unresolved centralization.
The numbers matter. The fee-to-burn conversion rate is roughly 90%, meaning Hyperliquid is committed to deflating its token supply aggressively. At the current daily run-rate, the annualized burn relative to max supply is roughly 4.3%. That is not trivial. It represents a tangible reduction in supply without relying on inflationary subsidy—a rarity in DeFi.
But I’ve been here before.
In December 2017, while auditing ICO whitepapers at Sapienza, I rejected a project with a flawed multisig wallet structure. The narrative was 1000x, but the code was leaky. That experience taught me that hype-driven metrics—TVL, user growth, even revenue—can obscure the real operational risks. Hyperliquid’s burn is optically bullish, but the underlying architecture demands scrutiny.
Let’s dissect the mechanism. Hyperliquid runs its own L1, HyperEVM, designed for high-throughput perpetual trading. The centralized sequencer processes orders at sub-second latency. Fees are collected in USDC and then—based on on-chain data—converted to HYPE and burned. This is a "buyback and burn" model, not a mere gas fee burn. The result: a direct link between trading volume and token scarcity.
Based on my Python simulations of Compound’s interest rate curves in 2020, I know that linear extrapolation from short-term data is dangerous. But even conservative estimates suggest Hyperliquid’s fee generation is real. The average daily fee over the past month is roughly $700k, implying a $255 million annual revenue run-rate. If that holds, the burn would consume around 25% of the remaining uncirculating supply in a year—assuming no changes in fee policy or volume.
Yet, structural risks lurk.
Centralized sequencer, centralized risk. Hyperliquid’s sequencer is currently operated by the team. They control transaction ordering, MEV extraction, and potential censorship. The roadmap promises decentralised sequencing, but as of July 2025, it remains a PowerPoint slide. dYdX, its main competitor, already runs a decentralized sequencer on its own chain. That difference in execution could become existential if regulators or attackers target the single point of failure.
Regulatory exposure. HYPE likely qualifies as a security under the Howey test: investors buy it expecting profits from the team’s efforts. The burn mechanism—returning value to holders—strengthens that argument. In the US, the SEC could classify Hyperliquid as an unregistered security exchange, especially given its near-$1 billion valuation. The team is partially anonymous, and no VC backing is disclosed. That reduces accountability. The institutional risk is underappreciated.
Maturity mismatch in stablecoin backing? Not directly here. But the fee pool is denominated in USDC. If a stablecoin depegs—a risk I flagged during the Terra collapse in 2022—the burn value could evaporate. Hyperliquid does not take on direct stablecoin risk, but the ecosystem’s reliance on Circle’s USDC is a macro dependency.
Now, the contrarian angle.
The prevailing narrative is that Hyperliquid’s burn proves the viability of "real yield" in DeFi. That crypto can decouple from traditional markets by offering genuine fee-based returns. I challenge this.

Global liquidity cycles are the dominant driver of crypto asset prices, not protocol revenue. In May 2022, Terra’s 20% APY loop collapsed when macro tightening hit risk appetite. Hyperliquid’s volume—and thus its burn—is highly correlated with BTC volatility and risk-on sentiment. A Fed pivot or a geopolitical shock could slash daily fees by 50% or more. The burn rate would crater, and the current valuation, which prices in perpetual growth, would re-rate sharply.
Yield is the bribe for your risk. Right now, Hyperliquid is bribing holders with deflation, but the bribe comes from a centralized fountain.
Volatility is the tax on unproven consensus. The market has yet to stress-test Hyperliquid’s burn under low-volatility or bearish conditions. Until it does, the burn narrative remains an untested hypothesis.
Liquidation waves are the market's way of repricing risk. If Hyperliquid’s sequencer fails under a high-volume cascade—say a flash crash—the resulting delay could wipe out positions and credibility. The protocol’s design assumes perfect uptime. That is a fragile assumption.
Let’s talk about the hidden signals.
The team holds a significant portion of unvested HYPE. Their incentive is to maximize token price at unlock. The burn mechanism boosts price by reducing supply, but it also serves as a marketing tool. If fee volume plateaus, the burn becomes less impactful, and the narrative shifts. I monitor Hyperliquid’s team wallet addresses. Any large transfer to exchanges is a sell signal.
Another insight from my 2024 ETF arbitrage work: institutional capital prefers transparency. Hyperliquid’s lack of VC branding and anonymous core team deters pension funds and asset managers. The burn is retail-friendly, not institution-ready.

What about the competitive landscape? dYdX has a similar fee model but decentralized sequencing. GMX uses a liquidity pool model. Hyperliquid’s performance edge is real, but it is narrowing. Other L2s are building faster VMs. The technical moat is temporary.
Where does that leave us?
The takeaway is not to dismiss the burn, but to frame it within a broader macro and risk-adjusted context.
Hyperliquid has built a machine that converts trading action into token scarcity. That is elegant. But the machine is centrally controlled, exposed to regulatory action, and dependent on sustained market activity. The current market prices the burn as a certainty. Reality is contingent.
If the team delivers on decentralized sequencing within the next six months, the risk premium shrinks. If they don’t, the burn becomes a story about centralized value extraction, not decentralized finance. The difference will be reflected in price—and in the lessons we draw in the next bear market.
Watch the sequencer upgrade. Monitor the team wallets. Track global liquidity. The burn is a signal, not a conclusion.
