To ensure that a fund with $1.5 billion under management can't secretly borrow 10x and then quietly ask for a bailout when the trade goes wrong. To ensure that if a rescue is necessary, it happens in the open, with clear terms, and with a public record of who gave what to whom. This is the future I still believe in. But I cannot call it inevitable. I can only call it necessary. And I can point to the pattern — the infinite loop of leverage, crisis, rescue, and recapitalization — and ask a simple question.
