The Coreum Bridge Hack: When a $200K Drain Crashed XRP Below $1

Over 97 minutes, 94 transactions drained 99.75% of the Coreum Bridge’s XRP reserves. The attacker moved 169,916 XRP in a steady, scripted rhythm—one payout every 50 seconds. The bridge, a lock-and-mint corridor between XRP Ledger and Coreum, was left with 493.5 XRP. Hours later, XRP price dipped below $1 for the first time since 2024. The data does not lie, only the narrative does. But the question is: did a $200,000 bridge hack really topple a $30 billion market cap asset?

Context

Coreum Bridge is a cross-chain infrastructure that wraps XRP on the Coreum network. It relies on a 17-of-28 multisig relayers—software nodes that monitor XRPL for deposits, then mint corresponding assets on Coreum. The model is standard: lock XRP on XRPL, mint wrapped XRP on Coreum. The bridge had been live, holding approximately 200,410 XRP in its escrow address. On August 9, 2025, an attacker exploited a logic flaw in the relayer software, not the XRP Ledger protocol itself. The multisig threshold was met, but the evidence signed was fabricated.

Core – The On-Chain Evidence Chain

Tracing the capital flow back to its genesis block: the attacker’s method was elegant in its simplicity. The relayer software is designed to detect any XRPL transaction that includes a Coreum destination tag in the memo field. Upon detection, it submits a proof to the Coreum bridge, which then releases wrapped XRP. The critical flaw: the relayer never verified that the payment’s destination address was actually the bridge’s official address. The attacker could send XRP between their own wallets, embedding a valid Coreum memo, and the relayer would treat it as a legitimate deposit.

I encountered an identical pattern during my 2017 ICO audits. A project’s token sale contract failed to verify that the sender address matched the whitelist—anyone could mint tokens by sending ETH to themselves. The fix was a single line of code: require(msg.sender == whitelist[msg.sender]). Here, the missing line is require(tx.destination == bridge_address). A basic validation that any competent security audit would flag. The fact that it was absent suggests either no audit or a superficial one.

Once the fake deposits were recorded on Coreum, the attacker used the minted wrapped XRP to withdraw real XRP from the bridge’s reserve. The multisig functioned as designed—17 of 28 relayers signed each of the 94 withdrawal proofs. But they were signing false premises. The bridge’s risk controls were absent: no rate limiting, no single-transaction cap, no automated pause. The wallet was drained in a monotonous, detectable pattern. Silence between the blocks reveals the true intent.

Contrarian – Correlation ≠ Causation

Let me be explicit: the Coreum Bridge hack did not cause XRP to drop below $1. The mathematics are undeniable. The attacker stole ~200,000 XRP, worth roughly $190,000 at the time of the attack. XRP’s 24-hour trading volume on August 11 was over $1.5 billion. A $190k drain is a rounding error. The price decline of 3.3% that day, and the psychological break of $1, was driven by broader market sentiment—likely a risk-off mood across crypto, exacerbated by technical selling at a key support level. The hack was a convenient narrative, not a fundamental driver.

Yet the market treats narratives as facts. The hack was amplified by KOLs like Ash Crypto, and the “bridge hacked” headline triggered a cascade of stop-losses. The data does not lie, only the narrative does. The irony is that the bridge’s insolvency risk is real for Coreum users—the remaining 493.5 XRP cannot cover the outstanding wrapped XRP liabilities. But that is a problem for Coreum, not for XRP holders. The XRP supply remains intact; the stolen tokens are simply in a new wallet. The ledger remembers what you forget.

Takeaway – Next-Week Signal

Over the next 7 days, watch for two signals. First, Coreum’s official response: will they compensate users, or let the bridge fail? If they reimburse, it signals commitment. If not, Coreum’s ecosystem trust erodes. Second, watch XRP price action around $0.98–$1.02. If the dip is an overreaction, buyers will step in. If the broader market is turning, $1 becomes resistance. The underlying lesson: bridge security is not about multisig counts; it’s about validating every input.
