10 networks. $120.6 billion in combined market cap. 97% average drawdown from all-time highs. And a subsidy coverage ratio so low that the word 'sustainable' has lost all meaning.
This isn’t FUD. It’s math. I’ve spent the past week pulling raw on-chain data from Algorand, Internet Computer, Polkadot, Avalanche, Filecoin, Cosmos Hub, Ethereum Classic, Flare, Flow, Worldcoin, and Pi Network. The numbers tell a story no press release can spin: these projects are burning new issuance to pay for security, while users pay pennies in fees. The gap is not a gap—it’s a chasm.
I’ve been in this space since the Parity Wallet hard fork in 2017. I’ve seen bad tokenomics before. But this is different. This is a systemic failure of economic design masked by narrative. And the market has not priced it in.
Context: Why Now?
The bull market of 2021-2022 papered over the flaws. Rising token prices meant inflation was a feature, not a bug. But after a 97% haircut, the same inflation becomes a death spiral. Every newly minted token is a drag on price. Every validator reward is a sell order waiting to happen.
The key metric is subsidy coverage ratio—the value of user fees divided by the value of new issuance going to validators/miners. A ratio below 1.0 means the network is spending more to secure itself than users are willing to pay. Below 0.1? That’s not a network. That’s a charity case.
Core: The Numbers Are Brutal
Let’s start with Algorand. In May 2026, validators earned 6.93 million ALGO in rewards. Users paid 50,000 ALGO in fees. That’s a coverage ratio of 0.0072. For every dollar of new token issuance, users kicked in less than a cent. On a $3.5B market cap (at the time), this network runs on 99.3% subsidy. Pure Algorand’s pure PBFT consensus doesn’t matter if the economic engine is a Ponzi.
Internet Computer locked itself into a fixed-cost model denominated in XDR (a basket of fiat currencies). When ICP dropped, the number of new tokens needed to pay node providers exploded. More issuance → more inflation → more selling pressure. The XDR peg bought operational stability at the cost of holder hemorrhage. Brilliant engineering, suicidal economics.
Filecoin saw this coming. Their Solstice proposal is a desperate attempt to shift rewards toward deals that generate fees. But the math is stubborn: at current utilization, Filecoin’s storage market generates trivial fees compared to the block rewards. The network is still a mining operation, not a marketplace.
Polkadot cut issuance by 25% in late 2025, then introduced a dynamic allocation pool. Good moves. But DOT’s inflation was still over 8% annualized in June 2026. The question: can governance keep cutting fast enough to outrun price declines?
Cosmos Hub has a Nash coefficient of 6—six validators control a majority of staked ATOM. The community voted to reduce issuance by 50% in 2025, but the weekly release still dwarfs fee revenue. Stakers are getting paid in dilutive tokens, not economic returns.
Avalanche has a fixed hard cap, which sounds deflationary. But AVAX burns fees while minting new AVAX for validators. The net effect: inflation until the cap is reached. The burn mechanism is a distraction. The network’s value proposition rests on activity—and activity is down 90% from peak.
Ethereum Classic just had its halving. That cuts new issuance, but ETC’s hash rate is already a fraction of ETH’s. Lower issuance + lower security = an equilibrium that doesn’t attract new users.
Flare continuously mints FLR for F-asset providers and validators. Governance has tried to reduce the pace, but the network is still heavily dependent on inflation to bootstrap liquidity.
Flow and Worldcoin are their own cases. Flow’s multi-role architecture creates complexity that discourages developers. Worldcoin has a massive unlock schedule ahead and no clear use case for its token beyond speculation. Pi Network hasn’t even launched on mainnet—its token exists only in private markets.
The Hidden Truth
Composability isn’t just a DeFi legos trap. It’s a tokenomics trap too. These networks assumed that growth in users would automatically cover costs. But when fees are near zero, even a 10x spike in activity can’t close the subsidy gap. Algorand would need fees to increase 140x just to reach a 1.0 coverage ratio. That’s not a pivot. That’s a miracle.
Another blind spot: the governance “solutions” are band-aids, not cures. Filecoin, Polkadot, Cosmos—they’re all reducing issuance. But reduced issuance means lower validator rewards. Validators may leave. Security may drop. And if security drops, the network becomes less attractive. The death spiral can still spin, just slower.
I can’t help but read these governance proposals as a form of managed decline. The question isn’t if these networks die—it’s at what token price they find a stable equilibrium. Based on my modeling, that equilibrium is likely 80-90% lower from today’s prices for most of these assets. Some, like Pi Network and Worldcoin, have no equilibrium at all.
Contrarian: The Bull Case That Isn’t
The counter-narrative: “These are foundational L1s. They’ll survive because of technology.” But technology is a necessary condition, not a sufficient one. EOS had better tech than Ethereum in 2018. Look where it is now. Technology does not generate revenue. Users do.
What about “new use cases”? Gaming, AI, real-world assets—none of these generate enough on-chain fees to cover these networks’ issuance. Even if a killer dApp appears, it will likely launch on Ethereum L2 or a module stack like Celestia, not on these legacy L1s. The distribution advantage is gone.
Some argue that these networks are “too big to fail.” That’s not how crypto works. Market cap doesn’t protect you from tokenomics math. Ask Terra.
Takeaway: What to Watch
I’m not calling these networks dead. But I am saying the current price levels do not reflect the economic reality. The next six months will be decisive:
- Algorand must increase fees or slash rewards by 99% to become sustainable. Neither is easy.
- Filecoin needs to convert storage deals into fee revenue at a scale 100x higher than today.
- Polkadot and Cosmos must continue cutting issuance while maintaining security—a delicate balance.
- Avalanche needs transaction volume to return to 2021 levels. Unlikely without a new catalyst.

Composability isn’t a philosophical trap. It’s an economic one. And these networks set themselves on fire trying to prove it.
